Archiving Rare UCLA Interviews: Nunnally Johnson

The mission of the UCLA Library’s Center for Oral History Research is “to document the history of Southern California and the Los Angeles metropolitan region through oral history interviews”.

Sunburst Recording has been working with the Center archiving some rare audio material, and recently we worked on a fascinating interview with screenwriter Nunnally Johnson (Grapes of Wrath, Tobacco Road, The Three Faces of Eve, and more).

The interview, focusing on Johnson’s storied career, was restored as part of a research project for an upcoming documentary film on the life of Marilyn Monroe by Moxie Firecracker Films entitled, Fragments: Marilyn Monroe.

Tim Robbins Recording at Sunburst

Actor and musician Tim Robbins stopped by Sunburst to record some vocal overdubs on a project he was involved with in New York. Tim did a great rendition of a classic Bob Dylan song, "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll'. We were reminded of his brilliant work in the1992 film "Bob Roberts", which was written and directed by Tim, in which he plays a conservative folk singing politician running for office during a fictitious senatorial race. This satirical mockumentary is wonderful and a must see in our book.

Cee Lo Green at Sunburst

Singer/Composer Cee Lo Green stopped by Sunburst Recording on October 17th to do a video spot for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

On 12-15-11, a featured segment of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart aired titled "Too Big To Mail".

Sunburst Recording was used as the location for Cee Lo Green's video portion of the bit.

Jim Hall & Ron Carter live show restoration

In September, we completed the restoration of a number of live shows including the November, 1982 Village West (New York City) performance by Legendary Jazz Guitarist Jim Hall and Bassist Ron Carter. The two shows required tape baking along with some EQ, compression and mixing tweaks to restore new life back into these fabulous performances.

Prince’s Musical Director Records at Sunburst

Morris Hayes, keyboardist and Musical Director for Prince was at Sunburst in late September 2011 recording tracks for an upcoming Family Groove Records project featuring vocalist Derick Hughes. Derick is the former lead singer of both The Tower Of Power and The Commodores.

Charles Alston & Hale Woodruff Murals

Audio from the late 1940's mural dedication ceremony at Golden State Insurance Company has been restored and transferred for UCLA Special Collections. The mural panels were completed in Los Angeles in 1949 by noted muralists Charles Alston and Hale Woodruff.

Ryan Ayers releases album

Acoustic guitarist Ryan Ayers has just released ERMITA, his debut solo acoustic guitar project. The release was kicked off with a performance at Trilogy Guitars in Playa Del Rey on October 2nd and was Produced by Ryan and Engineered by Mark Camperell. The album was recorded in late 2010 here at Sunburst and is now available on CD, digital download and vinyl formats.

Gabriel Roth Session

Last month, Gabriel Roth was recording at Sunburst to get that classic vintage analog sound. The project was the new (yet untitled) album by English band The Heavy and included both live horn and string section overdubs. Roth is best known for his arranging and engineering work with both Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.

Using his bag of retro recording techniques, Roth employed both analog 24 track 2" and Pro-Tools digital technology along with a number of outboard reverbs including our vintage EMT 140 tube reverb and Orban 111-B spring reverb.

John Van Hamersveld Photo Shoot

Noted fine artist and designer John Van Hamersveld was at Sunburst recently taking photos of Daniel Borine, Director of Family Groove Records for a Mix Magazine interview about the making of the album HE3 Project, Chapter Two. John designed the album cover for this CD/vinyl pressing and has also designed cover art for The Beatles (Magical Mystery Tour) and The Rolling Stones (Exile On Main Street).

Craig Brandau’s CD released

This week on 7-27-11, Craig Brandau's latest CD: Try To Remember was released both on i-tunes as a download and as a hard copy available at craigbrandau.com. The album is a collection of 1950's and 1960's Pop standards arranged by Howard Heitmeyer for Ukulele and Acoustic Guitar.

Craig plays both instruments but the album features mainly the ukulele along with Cali Rose on vocals, Denny Croy on String Bass and Craig Fundyga on Marimba and Percussion. Recorded by Bob Wayne at Sunburst in early 2011, the project was produced by Craig Brandau, Cali Rose and Bob Wayne.
